LINES WRITTEN IN THE EARLY SPRING -William Wordsworth

About the poet:
William Wordsworth was popularly known as a poet of Nature. He regarded nature as his mother. He was Britain’s poet laureate from 1843 until his death. This poem Lines written in the Early Spring expresses the poet’s feeling towards nature.

Concept of the poem:
While the poetis in a grove( a small area of land with a group of trees) his mind is filled with both pleasant and sad thoughts. He feels very sad because men do harm both to nature and other men. When the poet links with nature, his mind is filled with pleasant thoughts. When he has lost his link with nature (thinks of human beings) his mind is filled with sad thoughts.

Pleasant thoughts:
The poet enjoys this twice nature and tells even the birds feel happy. The birds in the bower moved around the poet hoping and playing. He is not able to measure their pleasant thoughts.

“The budding twigs spread out their fan
To catch the breezy air”

The poet is able to derive pleasure from nature. But he couldn’t measure or explain their happiness. Though the poet does not understand their language, he is able to understand their happiness. Nature gives us peace of mind. Nature teaches moral values.

Sad thoughts:
In the sweet mood of pleasant thoughts bring sad thoughts to the poet’s mind. Men do injustice to one another. Man lives in miserable conditions. Man has lost his peace and balance with nature. Man himself is the reason for his sorrow. The poet is lamenting (to express sorrow or unhappiness about something)” what man has made of man”

Nature’s holy plan:
The poet feels that nature is a holy plan of God. The poet says that man is not happy because he has lost his link with the nature. We should link with God. This is the only way to have happiness in life. It is the message of the poem.

Primrose and Periwinkle:
Primrose is a wild plant with yellow flowers. Periwinkle is a trailing plant with large blue flowers. Every flower such as (Primrose and Periwinkle)in that sweet bower enjoys the air it breathes.

Conclusion

i. He has lost his link with nature.
ii. He has forgotten how to enjoy nature.
iii. Man is cruel to other men.
If you are in torture
go to nature
because nature is your teacher
