THE CONVOCATION ADDRESS – Dr.Arignan Annadurai

Introduction:

Dr. C.N. Annadurai, popularly called Arignar Anna was an Indian politician who served as a Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (1967-69). He was a great orator (public speaker) and an acclaimed writer in Tamil. Jawaharlal Nehru hailed him as one of the greatest parliamentarians. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Annamalai University.

Revenues from the community:

Most of the money needed for maintaining institutions of higher education comes from the revenues collected from the community in which we live. A good proportion of that revenue comes from the tillers and toilers (cultivators and hard workers).  They did not enjoy this privilege. They submit themselves to discomfort. They expect the next generation to lead better life.

Your contribution to amount of the social chest:

Students have drawn large amount of money from the social chest. So it is the most important duty of a student to do something good for the coming generations. They have to acquire the means for a decent living. It is the first motivation for all human activity. No one can ignore it. That ought not to be the sole objective.

“We expect something which is higher and nobler of you.”

The role of the University: Universities are the repositories (store houses) of knowledge. They are the nursing ground of thought, wisdom and service.  They prepare individuals with the task of better society. They trim and train, guide and lead the common man. They develop the true spirit of democracy, appreciation of others point of view and adjustment of differences through discussions. They develop individual responsibility and judgement. They develop broad-mindedness. They prepare students for the task of making democracy fruitful and effective.

After graduation: They serve the society bringing light, sunshine solace (comfort), hope and a new life to everyone. Unless service is the outcome the sermons (speech on moral subject) become sweet nothing. The world in which they begin the journey may dim their hope, disturb their determination. They may come across unpleasant events. They may find self seekers enthroned and the patient worker decried. They may be discouraged. They may face unfavorable environment.

Conclusion: Arignar Anna pointed out that graduates have drawn largely from the social chest to b become graduates. It is our duty to replenish the society richly. The speech of the great scholar filled us with hope and inspiration.
