THE FIRST PATIENT – C.V.Burgess

Introduction: C.V. Burgess is a humorous playwright. His plays usually accommodate a number of characters. As the curtain rose, we can see a number of men and women waiting at the dentist’s waiting room. Man 4 has a rough bandage died around his jaw and groaning.

The first patient: The dentist arrives at 8.30 a.m. Joe the first patient is called. Other patients are discussing various things about medicine. In the meantime woman 7 enters the clinic with a little girl Dorothea. Another woman 8 enters the clinic with a little boy.

An important character woman 5: Throughout the play woman 5 concentrates on showing her photographs. She shows her holiday photographs to all the patients. Woman 6 is patiently listening to the conversation of woman 5. There are wails, groans, cries of the children and sobs in the waiting room due to the sounds from the surgery. Woman 5 is not affected by any one of this. She is completely unaware of what is happening in the surgery.

The Dentist’s instrument cabinet (box): The dentist comes out and locates the key of his tool cabinet. He has been trying to open it using the hammer, the pliers and hacksaw. But everything was in vain. The patients think that the dentist is using these tools in his clinic for surgery. When the first patient Joe comes out, everyone has moved outside from the waiting room except woman 5. Joe explains everything to Emily (Joe’s wife). The dentist had lost his key so the dentist has been using the hammer, the pliers and hacksaw to open his instrument cabinet for a long time.

Humorous story: The dentist is waving a key. The key of the cabinet (instrument box) is under the telephone directory. The little girl Dorothea and the little boy reveal the truth that they have no tooth ache. They didn’t like to go to school.

Conclusion: The dentist has used the tools to open his tools cabinet. He has not used the tools to pull the tooth out. The misunderstanding creates humour in the play. Thus a scene of commotion and confusion ends in a comedy of relief. But nobody is there to realize and enjoy it.
