Introduction:
Sir Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force during as a navigator during World War II. He devoted himself to help of Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust which he established.
On May 28, 1953:
On May 28, 1953 there were six men at Camp 8 on the South Col. As Pemba was too ill to climb, the others climbed that day to a height of 27,900 feet.
At the Sun set:
At the sun set, Hillary and Tenzing crawled into the tent, put on all their warm clothing, and wriggled into their sleeping bags. Next morning at 4 am on May 29, 1953, they began to get ready for the climb.
Preparation to the Summit:
Hillary removed his books. He cooked them over the fierce flame of the primus and managed to soften them up. They started their cooker. They drank large quantities of lemon juice and sugar. They finished eating the last tin of sardines on biscuits. Hillary dragged their oxygen sets into the tent and cleaned the ice off them. He rechecked and tested the oxygen cylinders. They had 3 pairs of gloves- silk, woolen and windproof.
Journey from 28000 feet to South Col:
They connected up their masks and turned on the valves to bring life giving oxygen into their lungs. The soft snow made a route on top of the ridge both difficult and dangerous. After several hundred feet they came to a tiny hollow. They found there the two oxygen bottles left on the earlier attempt by Evans and Bourdillon. They contained several hundred litres of oxygen about the snow conditions, they decided to go on. Hillary and Tenzing were relieved after they were nearing the summit.
Unforgettable Day:
They shook hands. They threw each one’s arms around their shoulders. They thumped each other on their backs. They were almost breathless. It was 11:30 am. when they reached the top of the summit.
The view from the top:
1)To the east was the giant neighbour Makalu.
2) Far away across the clouds, the great bulk of Kanchenjung
3) To the west, they could see the great ranges of Nepal.
The most important photograph:
The most important photograph showed the North ridge, showing the North Col and the old route. Tenzing made a little hole at the summit in the snow. He placed a bar of chocolate, a packet of biscuits and a handful of lollies. Hillary made a hole in the snow and placed the cramps beside Tenzing gifts.
