Introduction:
Two gentlemen of Verona is a story about love, devotion, sacrifice, sincerity and maturity displayed by two little boys. These boys worked hard day and night to save the life of their only sister, Lucia. She got training to become a singer. But unfortunately she had been suffering from tuberculosis of the spine.
Quite alone in the world:
The narrator A.J. Cronin and his companion saw the two small boys- the two gentlemen of Verona at the foothills of the Alps on the outskirts of Verona. The two boys were Nicola of 13 and Jacopo of 12. They lost their mother when they were very young. Their father, a widower, a well known singer had been killed in the early part of the German war. A bomb had destroyed their home and thrown the three children into the streets. They were quite alone in the world. They built a small shelter with their own hands amidst the rubble.
Hard working little boys:
Nicola and Jacopo sold strawberries on the outskirts of Verona. They did shoe polish work beside the fountain in the public square. They had given guidance to the tourist. They sold newspapers. They supplied American cigarettes they showed good restaurant to the needed. They did many things. Jacopo was lively as a squirrel. Nicolo’s smile was steady and engaging.
Simple life:
The two little boys – the two gentle men of Verona led a simple life. They were eating black bread and figs. They did not have a plan to go to the states.
Tell me:
The narrator of the story (or incident) asked the boys:
“Tell me,
What do you do with your money?”
They said,
But here, at present, we have other plans.
Into the hospitals:
They entered into the hospital. They seated at the beside of a girl about 20 years old. A vase of wild flowers, a dish of fruit and several books stood on her table “Every week, Lucia’s brothers have made their payment.” A pleasant-looking women trained as a nurse told this.
Sacrificed life:
The two little boys start their work early in the morning and finish it late at night. They spend nothing on clothes. They eat a little, like bread and figs. Usually they hire bicycles on Sundays to make a visit to Poleta (hospital), 30 kilometers from Verona.
Conclusion:
The two little boys returned from the hospital. They did not say a word of their sister. They safely kept their secret. Their devotion had touched the heart of the author deeply Their selfless action brought a new nobility to human life. They have promise of a greater hope for human society.
